Lucky Strike for Teen
On June 6th, with thunderstorms raging outside, 16-year-old BreAnna Helsel was in her Blanchard, Michigan home, approximately 110 kilometres north east of Grand Rapids, when she detected rain coming in from a kitchen window left open.
According to her mom, Linda Johnson, who told Greenville's Daily News, "She went to close the window and the lightning came through and hit her. We thought it must have hit the house or something."
When asked to describe what it felt like to have the lightning strike pass through her body, Helsel likened the sensation to that like "when your foot falls asleep."
The 16-year-old also described how she saw the electricity shoot out from her fingers and in to the lighting fixtures overhead, knocking out the house's electrical power instantaneously.
Afterwards, while at the hospital for observation, hospital staff suggested that, because Helsel appeared to be on quite the lucky streak, she should play the lottery right away. However, because she is too young to purchase the ticket, her mother went out the following day and bought her a Michigan lottery ticket.
"And we won 20 dollars!" Johnson proclaimed with a laugh. "What a way to start the summer."
