Pai Gow Poker Rules
Pai Gow Poker is continuing to grow in popularity among visitors to online casinos, and it's easy to see why. For one thing, the game is very straight forward and one can get the hang of it very fast.
The goal in Pai Gow Poker is to divide your 7-card hand into a 5-card (Highest) and a 2-card hand (2nd Highest). The 5-card hand must always outrank the 2-card hand (thus the names Highest & 2nd Highest). The 5-card hand is ranked just like poker, but that an A-2-3-4-5 straight ranks as the second highest straight. The 2-card hand may be either an individual or pair of cards. A pair of aces is the highest 2-card hand & the lowest is a 2-3. Players can opt to split their hand themself, or have the computer divide it with the 'House Way' method explained below.
Pai Gow Poker is played using a standard 53-card deck which includes a Joker. The Joker, mind you, may only be used for completing a straight, flush, or straight flush. Otherwise it's treated like an ace.
The House Way is a set of rules which explains how the dealer arranges his or her hand. As well, with a click of the 'House Way' button, a player may also use the House Way on their own hand.
The 'Front' is the 2-card hand while the 'Back' is the 5-card hand.
- No pair: Place the highest card in the back & the next 2 highest cards in the front.
- One pair: Place the pair in back & the next 2 highest cards in the front.
- Two pair: Place 2 pair in back, but split in the following circumstances:
One pair is 7's or greater & no ace singleton.
Pair of jacks or better & 6's or better & an ace singleton.
Pair of aces & any other pair.
- Three pair: Always play highest pair in front.
- Three-of-a-kind: Always play three-of-a-kind in back except break up 3 aces.
- Full house: Split except with pair of 2's and an ace/king may be played in front.
- Full house with three-of-a-kind & two pairs: Play the highest pair in front.
- Three-of-a-kind twice: Always play highest pair in front.
- Straights, flushes, straight flushes, & royal flushes:
Always play straight or flush in the high hand, but play as a two pair if one of the following:
- Any 2 pair & an ace singleton.
- Pair of jacks & pair of 6's.
- Pair of aces & any other pair.
With a 6 or 7-card straight or flush, put the highest hand possible in front while keeping the straight or flush in back.
Play straight or flush over straight flush to enhance front hand to jack or better.
Play straight or flush over royal flush to enhance front hand to king or better.
4-of-a-kind: Play according to the rank of the 4-of-a-kind:
2 through 6: Always keep these together.
7 through 10: Split unless an ace or better can be played in front.
Jack through king: Split unless hand also comprises a pair of 10's or higher.
Aces: Split unless a pair of 7's or higher may be played in front.
5 aces: Split unless pair of kings can be played in front.
Pai Gow poker games are completed after the hands have all been arranged. The player's hands are then compared to those of the dealer & the winner is determined:
- If both the dealer's hands are higher, you lose your wager.
- If one of the dealer's hands is higher, one lower, it's a push & your bet is returned.
- If both your hands are higher, you win even money on your wager (1 : 1) minus a 5 percent bank commission.
Should an exact match between hands ("a Copy") occur, the tie goes to the house.
